Home Learning

Home Learning at Friesland School is simple, powerful, and meaningful. On Monday – Thursday all Friesland scholars complete 90 minutes of home learning after the school day. They spend one hour completing either Read / Cover / Write / Check OR Self Quizzing using a set section of their 100% Sheet and half an hour reading their DEAR book. Every Friday scholars complete 60 minutes of Home Learning. They spend half an hour reading their DEAR book and half an hour of Complete Maths Tutor. Home learning at Friesland School supports all scholars in developing core skills in literacy and numeracy while also learning the key components of knowledge from their 100% curriculum.

Modes of Learning

It is essential that when scholars are learning through Read / Cover / Write / Check OR self-quizzing they are working in a silent environment which is free from distractions. This will enable scholars to focus their attention on what they are learning.

Scholars work in Silent Independent Mode at home and must have access to the following:

  • Black pen
  • Green pen
  • Ruler
  • Home Learning Planner
  • Home Learning Book
  • 100% Sheet Companion

Home Learning Timetable

The Home Learning timetable is available in the 100% Companion and is published below. Please note Home Learning tasks are set by the day on the timetable and depending on the student’s timetable may need to be set in a lesson prior to this day. Several days, usually a week is given until the due date.

Read, Cover, Write, Check

The Process

  1. Students check the boxes they need to learn from their 100% Sheet. This information is found in the planner and on Microsoft Teams
  2. They write their name and subject at the top of the lined paper
  3. They read the information from their 100% Sheet and chunk this up if necessary
  4. Cover with 100% Sheet with planner
  5. Write out the information exactly as it was on the 100% Sheet
  6. Remove planner and pick up green pen
  7. Check what is written is correct and tick
  8. Make corrections in green pen so that it is identical to the content on the 100% Sheet
  9. Repeat
  10. When 100% is right, move on to the next chunk of information

Non-Negotiables

Once your child has completed Read / Cover / Write / Check please check that the work fulfils the non-negotiables for Home Learning:

  • Student name and subject on top line
  • Full page of A4
  • Fill from left to right
  • Evidence of green pen
  • Writing not larger than required
  • No large spaces between words
  • The task should take 30 minutes

We look forward to appreciating the Home Learning produced by our Friesland scholars.

Self-Quizzing

The Process

  1. Scholar writes and underlines the date, subject and title of topic in their Home Learning book.
  2. Scholar reads (preferably aloud as this aids memory) the key knowledge from their 100% Sheet.
  3. Scholar writes 10 questions based on the knowledge they have learnt. Scholar covers the section of their 100% Sheet and answers 5 of the questions they have set themselves in full sentences.
  4. Scholar checks their answer fully using their 100% Sheet and ticks if correct, corrects mistakes or adds additional information in their green pen.
  5. Scholar completes the process again for the remaining 5 questions.

Generating Questions

Use Who? What? Why? How? When? or use a command such as ‘Draw a molecule’

Example questions might include:

  1. Who was Michael Faraday and what was he famous for?
  2. What does the word ‘electron’ mean?
  3. Why did many buildings get destroyed before Benjamin Franklin’s invention?
  4. How does electricity flow from one component to another?
  5. When does electricity become static?

Non-Negotiables

Once your child has completed self-quizzing, please check that the work fulfils the non-negotiables for Home Learning:

  1. The subject must be on the top line.
  2. There should be a total of 10 questions and 10 answers, with numbers indicated in the margin.
  3. Answers to questions must be in full sentences.
  4. There must be evidence of green pen.
  5. The writing must not be any larger than required and there must be no large spaces between the words.
  6. The task should take 30 minutes.

We look forward to appreciating the Home Learning produced by our Friesland scholars.
