Students from year 12 and 13 both took part in a visit to a local software engineering company Microlise. Microlise specialise in software which is used in the logistics, fleet management and telematics they are the largest provider of such products in the Uk with their software being used worldwide by companies like JCB.
As part of the day students took part in a range of activities including paired programming in C# with members of the graduate scheme at Microlise. Students got involved in team building competitions which the company uses as part of their interview tasks in which they competed in groups against each other to build bridges within set parameters while learning about and using software development techniques in these groups to come up with solutions to problems. These were then assessed by the lead software engineers at Microlise and a prize awarded to the winning group.
Students got a first-hand view of what life as a software engineer is like along with other areas of work and study they could follow in industry in the future.
Students had a great time and left with new skills and insights into the world of work in Computer Science. The students and Computer Science department would like to thank Microlise for their hospitality and look forward to working with them again in the future.
