Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service delivered an incredibly informative and powerful presentation and demonstration to all Friesland Sixth Form students on Friday 16th September.

We were delighted to welcome ex Friesland student George and his fellow organiser Laura, alongside colleagues from the fire and paramedic services.

The first part of the presentation involved an explanation of potentially life saving techniques and the role of the fire service and paramedics at the scene of a road traffic accident. Mrs Pitman acted as the paramedic’s ‘patient’, as students learned aspects of both a firefighter and paramedic’s role and what occupants in a car could encounter in a situation that we all want to avoid; it was stressed just what a responsibility it is for anyone to be driving a vehicle and especially how relevant this is for young and inexperienced drivers.

We then moved from the Common Room to the car park where students witnessed the team cutting Mrs Pitman out of a car, with a commentary of this re construction being provided by one of the team.

The event enabled students to reflect upon very serious issues and for some it proved particularly enlightening when considering careers in the emergency services.

We are delighted that the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be joining us on an Employability/Careers day on Friday 21st October and thank them for their continued association with Friesland.
